Why I’m joining the CDU University Run

Dr. Yong Larrazabal’s disappointment was palpable during our phone conversation.

The eye surgeon and marathoner had purposely announced in advance in Facebook the date for Cebu Doctors’ University’s flagship running event, the University Run, to inform other race organizers and avoid another conflict in race schedules.

The run, which serves as opening of CDU’s Intramurals, was scheduled way ahead, when activities in the school’s academic calendar were determined.

University Run organizers coordinated schedules with other race directors to make sure that they would not hold their runs on the same day. But late last week, the buzz started spreading among runners in Facebook—another race has been scheduled on Aug. 15, the date of the 5th CDU University Run.

It’s a 25K international “marathon,” an oxymoron that should serve as warning. Runners know that you only use the word marathon to describe a race that is 42.195 kilometers long. There are no shorter “marathons.”

The Pilipinas 25K International Marathon is backed by International Pharmaceuticals Inc. (IPI) and organized by Joe Deresas, an affable man who was in charge of two of the most problematic races I’ve joined.

I think Deresas sees Pilipinas 25K as his chance for redemption after bungling the races he organized last year. I hope he redeems himself and IPI decides to sponsor another run, but I won’t be there to see it.

I’m joining the University Run.

Yes, elite runners will likely join Pilipinas 25K because it offers bigger prizes. The race will also likely attract runners who’ve grown tired running the same 5K, 10K or 21K distances in the same courses—the 25K route will pass the South Road Properties.

But I’m joining the University Run to honor and recognize the crucial role Larrazabal played in making running a mainstream sport in Cebu City.

Back when there were only a couple of running events in Cebu a year, Larrazabal organized monthly races to give runners a venue for their sport. I’m one of the many people who started running in these monthly races. It was in one of these events that I nearly died (an exaggeration) in a fool-hardy and vainglorious attempt at racing Rening Ylaya.

With the running boom in Cebu, Larrazabal decided to stop the monthly races to give way to other organizations who wanted to stage their own fun runs. But even then, he said he is prepared to hold it again in the unlikely chance the running boom would wane. The least other organizers could have done is to coordinate with him on the schedules.

Anyway, the Aboitiz Race to Reduce run, which will use timing chips and include a 21K distance, is scheduled the week after and should satisfy local runners’ longing for longer distances.

what’s the big deal?… both activities promotes RUNNING, whether the other uses the wrong adjective of their event or whether the other is a pioneer we should be happy about it that RUNNING is IN!… i guess it’s wrong to talk trash on who is or he is so so… Let’s be open and thankful that a lot of organizers are supports our sport. Let’s stop the crabs crawling in our brains ‘coz it ain’t a big deal.

    Enjoy RUNNING!

This was not the first time that a conflict of these kind of events happen… I say the CDC organized run will have its numbers (CDU Students) since Yong is very influential figure and let’s leave it to the running aficionado’s on where they will join.

  • ricmangubat

it doesn’t matter, if you prefer a longer route or distance then go for the 25 k. but for me i will join the pilipinas 25

    Joshua,
It’s not talking trash. It’s telling the truth. The recent races of Joe Deresas were problematic, if not outright disasters. It’s not crab mentality either. I did say that I hope Joe Deresas will be able to redeem himself and that the Pilipinas25K will also be successful.

In this usage, the word “marathon” is NOT AN ADJECTIVE. It is a proper NOUN that means a race that measures 42 kilometers long.

By the way, I think your parents are cool. Can you give me their contact details? I want to feature them. Just email it to maxlimpag[at]gmail.com. Thanks!

I intend to run this as well. I just hope that the distance is exact so that we can use it a basis to gauge our fitness and compare to our PRs.

  • shuaBOX

heheh you got me there Max… Well I understand that there was a dilemma on the guy Joe organizing, I understand runners grievances ‘coz we prefer “bahalag sobra kaysa kulang”…

i find this too funny, especially on the “marathon” rant. Marathon is a word often used for any long and arduous undertaking, try google you’ll see. Stop being so particular with the use of a word, i guess we should stop saying movie marathon, swimming marathon or unless the swim or the movie is 42.195km long, im just saying!

be thankful there are multiple races to run and choose from. be where you want to be, but please don’t pull the other down.

  • admin

    Dmdoi,

Yes, you are right. The word marathon is used to describe a “long and arduous undertaking” but in the context of a name of race, it is a technical term with a very specific meaning—a race that is 42.195km long. I wrote about the semantics in a separate post: http://www.ceburunning.com/semantics/

Anyway, my commentary is not meant to pull IPI down. I do not know anyone from IPI and I think they were just victims in this incident. I think IPI should be applauded for supporting sports like cycling and running.

But they were wrong in using the term marathon and they knew it. They were just being stubborn, wrongly thinking it saved them face. At least ABS-CBN and The Freeman took steps to correct the mistake themselves by referring to the race as 25K international race or run in the latter coverages of the event, refusing to follow the organizers in their mistaken use of the term marathon.

IPI risked embarrassing the entire Cebu running community by being stubborn in calling its 25K race a marathon, giving the province, which is a hotbed of running in southern Philippines, the undeserved notoriety of being host to a “marathon” that is not a marathon. Let’s hope people from outside Cebu won’t have second thoughts in joining the appropriately named and excellently organized Cebu City Marathon and ask “is it a true marathon or is it another mistaken use of the term?”

IPI pulled itself down by being stubborn despite warning signs. I know from a very reliable source that the company was severely disappointed with the race.

Did you run it? Are you an IPI employee or official? Because the feedback I got from runners was that the 25K race of IPI was badly run. A disaster, one told me. Is it true? Or did these runners lie to me?

As to being particular in the use of words, I am in the business of being particular in the use of words. I think we all SHOULD BE particular in the use of words because words actually have specific meanings. I may not always succeed but at least I try.
