Talisay City to run for a smoke-free environment

According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco kills more than five million people a year — more than HIV, TB and malaria combined, and it will kill more unless urgent action is taken.

It is a fact that a lot of dreaded diseases like cancer, chronic lung disease, asthma, cardiovascular disease are caused by tobacco smoke. It is time for smokers to kick the habit and for non-smokers to help in the campaign against the killer vice.

The Talisay District Hospital, as one of the primary providers of health services in the community, aims not only to treat but to protect its clientele from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. The hospital has therefore embarked on the promotion of tobacco cessation in its institution and nearby communities.

To gain a city-wide awareness of this program, the Talisay District Hospital Committee on Tobacco Cessation, in cooperation with the Talisay City Runners Club, will launch on August 28 the “Run for a 100% Smoke-Free Environment.”

The run will be in 3k, 5k, 10k and 21k categories. It will start and end at the Talisay City Hall by way of the SRP. For more information and details about how you can join the run and/or help in the smoke-free campaign, please call 273-3225. (PR)

Bigger prizes at stake in Aboitiz-Capitol Race to Reduce Challenge

This year’s edition of the Race to Reduce Challenge Visayas Leg will offer the biggest prize so far in a race in Cebu — P70,000 to the male and female first-place finishers in the full marathon, organizers announced in a press conference today.

Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. (AEV) chief reputation officer Sebastian Lacson said this year’s run will be bigger because the event is co-organized by the Cebu Provincial Government as a highlight of the month-long celebration of Cebu Province’s 442nd founding anniversary.

In their staging of the event last year, Aboitiz was able to gather more than 2,000 runners. In this year’s staging of the run, Lacson said they are targeting 5,000 runners to join.

The run will be held on August 14 at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City. It will have 3K, 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K categories.

For the first time in a race, organizers will be offering several registration options that include the choice of not having a singlet, which Lacson said they are encouraging. “Most runners prefer to wear their own running shirts because they are already comfortable with it,” he said in the press conference.

Registration fees, options

For the 42K, runners will have to pay P700 if they want to have both the chip and race singlet. If they choose not to get the singlet, they need only to pay P550 as registration fee and they will get only the timing chip.

For 21K and 10K runners, participants who want to have both the chip and singlet need to pay P600. If they choose to only get the timing chip, they need only to pay P450.

The 5K race offers the most options. For the full racing kit of chip and singlet, participants need to pay P500. If they’ll choose only the chip, they need only to pay P350. Those who want only the singlet and not the chip, can pay P300. Those who want only to join the distance’s Fun Run category need only to pay P150.

Participants in 3K who want to have a singlet can pay the full registration fee of P300. Those who want to join the run but not pay for the singlet can register under the fun run category for P150.

Organizers, however, said only those with timing chips are qualified to win in the different categories.

Registration is ongoing at the One Cebu Expo Secretariat at the Capitol, Runnr in Ayala Center Cebu, Toby’s in SM City Cebu and at the Cebu City Sports Center. Runners can also register online at www.aboitiz.com/race2reduce, www.aboitizpower.com/race2reduce, or at www.facebook.com/race2reduce. The deadline of registration is on Aug. 6. Organizers said the deadline “will never be extended.”

Biggest prizes so far

Lacson said the Race to Reduce Challenge will offer the biggest prizes so far in a race in Cebu. The 1st placers in the male and female categories of 42K will each receive P70,000 cash. The 2nd placers will each get P40,000; 3rd placers, P20,000; 4th placers, P5,000; 5th placers, P3,000; 6th placers P2,000 and the 7th to 10th placers will get P1,000.

In the 21K, the male and female winners will each get P20,000; 2nd placers, P10,000; 3rd placers, P5,000; 4th placers P3,000; 5th placers P1,000; and the 6th to 10th placers, P500 each.

In the 10K, the prizes are: male and female 1st placers, P5,000; 2nd placers P3,000; 3rd placers, P2,000; and 4th to 10th placers, P300.

In the 5K race, the male and female winners will each get P3,000. The 2nd placers will receive P2,000; the 3rd placers P1,000; and the 4th to 10th placers, P200.

Timing system

Race director Raffy Uytiepo said the event will be using the Strider timing system which uses a strip of paper that you attach into your shoelaces. Jovy Tan of Aboitiz said the system comes with a range of data for each finisher, including their finish time, split times and place in their categories.

Uytiepo said they will observe a 7-hour cutoff time for 42K runners in the interest of road safety. Those still on the road after 7 hours will no longer be allowed to finished the run.

Lacson said they will publish the names of all finishers with timing chips in a local newspaper. The publication of finishers was started in last year’s initial staging of the run. Lacson said they are the only race in the country publishing the names of finishers.

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said Capitol is extending full support for the event because her government “recognizes this need to encourage activities for health and wellness.” She said she is confident that the “can-do and indomitable will of the Cebuano will be shown” in the race.

Activities that promote healthy lifestyle and protection of the environment “is something we all must embrace,” the governor said.

Race organizers said they have gotten the assurance of full support from local officials in areas where runners will pass such as Mandaue City, Consolacion, Liloan and Compostela.

Lacson said finishers will get a foot massage, breakfast and photo opportunity at the Race to reduce photo wall near the finish line.

As with last year’s race, a photo contest will again be held for this year’s event. Photographers, however, have to register for the contest at the Aboitiz Corporate Center on Gov. M. Cuenco Ave. in Banilad, Cebu City.

The gun times for the different distances are 42K – 4 a.m.; 21K – 4:30 a.m.; 10K – 5 a.m.; and 3K/5K – 5:30 a.m.

Cebu City Marathon organizers publish names of registrants

Organizers of the Cebu City Marathon on Jan. 9 have published the names of those who registered for the race. The names (listed below) are being published so that runners can double-check their registrations and contact organizers in case of problems.

The 42K and 21K race packs will be released starting Wednesday at the Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu. Race packs for 5K registrants will be released starting Thursday.

Cebu City Marathon 42K, 21K routes finalized

Organizers of the Cebu City Marathon on Jan. 9, 2011 have finalized the routes for the 42K and 21K races. The major differences in next year’s routes are 1.) runners will pass through the Cebu South Coastal Road tunnel for the first time and 2.) the South Road Properties (SRP) portion has been made longer for the 42K.

Runners of the 42K and 21K routes will also be passing by the scening Malacañang sa Sugbo, Fort San Pedro and Plaza Independencia on the way to the tunnel.

Organizers, however, are still determining the 5K route. They said they might not use an out-and-back route because of the volume of registrants.

Chicharon vendor tops Cebu leg of 34th Milo Marathon

A runner who sells chicharon or pork cracklings for a living topped the 21K men’s division in Sunday’s Cebu leg of the 34th Milo Marathon.

Adonis Singson set aside his chicharon to race on Sunday. He finished the tough 21K route that passed the South Road Properties (SRP) at a time when the sun was already high up the sky. Adonis claimed the top spot, which carried a P10,000 top prize and an all-expenses paid trip to the Milo Marathon National Finals in Manila on Dec. 12. Singson, 27, finished third last year and placed second in 2006 and 2007.

He told Milo that he decided to go for the top spot after learning that defending champion Mendel Lopez wasn’t joining. Lopez got busy preparing for the geodetic engineering board examination, which he recently passed.

Jobert Carolino finished in second place with a time of 1:15:39 while Mohsherwin Managil won third place with a time of 1:17:10.

Completing the top 10 are 4.) Noel Tillor; 5.) Dandy Maturan; 6.) Ian Refuela ; 7.) Harold Estrada; 8.) Noy Jopson; 9.) Paul James Zafico and 10.) Renz Ericson Gabuya .

Among those who joined yesterday’s 21K race was Nestle Chief Executive Officer John Miller, who was listed as having finished in 2:04:09. (Full results provided by Milo at the end of the article. Note: there have been reports that the results are off by at least two minutes. )

In the women’s 21K, 21-year-old Mary Joy Tabal topped the division on her first try, outracing defending champion Madelyn Carter in the final stretch. Tabal clocked in 1:28:44 to claim the P10,000 top prize. Carter settled for second with her time of 1:31:30 while Emily Rosas was third with her time of 1:52:56.

Tabal, a fourth year commerce student of the Southwestern University, and Carter were the only two women who met the qualifying time of 1:35:00. They will join two-time national champion and Asian Games-bound Jhoann Banayag, who topped the Davao leg last week and Metro Manila leg winner Luisa Raterta in the finals.

“This is my first time to try the 21K. I’ve been only in the 10K. But I think I can still shine in the finals in Manila. I will just prepare myself hard,” Tabal told Milo.

Jordan Bacong topped the male 10K with a time of 34:21. Reprinel Banzon was second while Robert Daang finished third.

Christy Tutor topped the women’s 10K with a time of 46:55. She was followed by Gladys May Sumile in second place and Celestina Lim in third.

Biggest provincial Milo running event to fire off on Sunday

The 34th Milo Marathon Cebu eliminations will fire off on Sunday with an expected 23,000 runners in 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K. The event in Cebu, which will start on Osmeña Blvd. near Cebu Normal University and end inside the Cebu City Sports Center is the second biggest leg of the Milo Marathon eliminations following Metro Manila.

Milo sports executive Andrew Neri said that for this year’s Cebu elimination, they implemented several innovations for a local Milo run including the 1.) use of a timing system for 10K and 21K, 2.) production of better race singlets using fabric imported from Thailand, 3.) giving of finishers’ medals and 4.) designation of different qualifying times for various age groups.

Neri said that those who complete the 21K run within the cut-off time of 2 hours and 30 minutes will get finishers’ medals. He said a bus will be designated as sweeper to transport those who can’t make it within the cut-off time and are deemed unable to finish by race marshals.

Milo officials said the decision whether to pick a runner up will be made on a “case-to-case basis.”

Stephanie Sy, consumer marketing manager for Milo, said that as part of the company’s advocacy, they will be donating shoes to young runners. Before this morning’s launch, the company gave away 400 pairs of Milo running shoes to students of Tejero Elementary School.

Sy said they decided to give away shoes because at times, they see children who run barefoot

The program for Sunday’s event will start at 5 a.m. on Osmeña Blvd. The 21K gun start will be at 5:30 a.m., to be followed by successive gun starts for the other races.

Neri said that while they encourage 10K and 21K runners to use the singlets issued by Milo, they will not require it. Neri said they recognize that most runners of longer distances are already comfortable with their own running shirts. He said, however, that the singlets being distributed by Milo are of “very good” quality and will not cause chafing.

Runners of 3K and 5K, however, will be required to wear the Milo singlets because of security issues and for convenience in monitoring participants, race officials said. Bulk of the 23,000 runners on Sunday are registered in 3K and 5K.

The 34th Milo Marathon Cebu eliminations is the sixth of 18 races scheduled for the year. After the Cebu leg, Milo will head to Tagbilaran City on Sept. 12, Dumaguete City on Sept. 19, Iloilo City on Sept. 26 and Naga City on Oct. 3.

Aboitiz Race to Reduce Challenge 2010 times now out

The Aboitiz Race to Reduce Challenge finish times have now been released. The event is unique in the Philippines because it is the first time that race organizers printed in a newspaper all the names of runners and their finish times.

The use of timing chips allowed organizers to quickly compile the results of 10K and 21K runners and publish it in Sun.Star Cebu. In the 5K and 3K categories, only the names are published.

What do the different columns mean?
1.) Finish time is the total time it took you to cross the finish line since gunstart. If you are at the back, your finish time will be some seconds longer than your chip time or official time.
2.) Chip time is your official time. It is the time it took you to complete the race from the time you stepped on the mat to the time you crossed the finish line.
3.) 5KM and 10KM columns. These are the times it took you to reach these turning points.

The Great Lapu-Lapu Run 21K results now out

Here are the finish times of the runners in the 21-kilometer races of The Great Lapu-Lapu Run. The results were sent to CebuRunning by the organizers of the race. The finish times were taken from data gathered by the timing system deployed by Finishline.ph. If you have concerns over the accuracy of the results or you can’t find your name, please contact the organizers in their Facebook page.

If you can’t find your name in your gender category, try searching for it in the other category. If you can’t find your name by searching for your first name, try searching using your surname or bib numbers. If you spot an error, please contact the organizers so that they can correct the entries.

On a personal note, The Great Lapu-Lapu Run is very memorable for me because I was finally able to break two hours in the 21K. According to the results, I completed my run with a net chip time of 1:58:07.

Cebu City Marathon 42K and 21K results now out

Official race times for the very successful Cebu City Marathon 2010 are now out. The times are based on ChampionChip data.

Kenyan Willy Tanui dominated the 42K race by finishing the race in 2 hours 30 minutes and 57 seconds. Kenyan missionary Simon Losiaboi, who is currently based in Cebu, placed second with a time of 02:30:57. Eric Panique finished as the fastest Filipino by placing third with his time of 02:32:23.

Kenyan David Kipsang was fourth with his time of 02:35:41 while Elmer Sabal placed fifth with a time of 02:37:23.

On a personal note, I finished my first 21K in 02:04:59. I aimed for a sub-2 finish but couldn’t pass up witnessing the drama in the race between Aileen Tolentino and Mary Grace delos Santos in the last few kilometers.

‘I’m gonna die but I have to win the race first’

On the halfway point of her 21-kilometer race during the Mindanao eliminations of the Milo Marathon on Nov. 8, 2008, Mary Grace delos Santos blacked out.

The Zamboanga City native lay sprawled and bloodied on one of the roads of Cagayan de Oro City after a motorcycle, sent flying by a rampaging truck, hit her.

“I don’t know how long I lay there,” delos Santos said, her expression still pained while recalling the point of impact a year later on the tracks of the Cebu City Sports Center, “I blacked out.”

She also does not know whether she was between the wheels of the truck or beside them when the vehicle continued to run after the accident.

What she recalls, however, is her fierce determination to finish the race that she was already leading. She got on her feet and started checking her body gingerly for injuries before breaking into a run.

“People were telling me to pull out of the race,” delos Santos said in Bisaya, “but I wanted to continue. I wanted to finish the race. I was determined to finish the race.”

Delos Santos, instead, asked the race official who was telling her withdraw to just tail her on a motorcycle as she dashed to the finish line.

When she touched the back of her head, delos Santos found blood in her hand. That wound would later require five stitches to close.

“I told myself, I’m going to die. I’m going to die. But I have to win the race first,” she said with a soft laugh.

Minutes later, delos Santos finished in first place, way ahead of the others. She would probably have been first even if doctors had attended to her and did a quick stitch to close that wound right on the spot where she met the accident.

The expression on her face as she crossed the finish line is a cross between relief and trepidation. Delos Santos was sure she would die. She would later be vomiting repeatedly in the hours after the race, her trainer Mohsherwin Managil said.

Not only did delos Santos survive the accident that killed the driver of the motorcycle that hit her, she went on to finish a full marathon—all 42.195 kilometers of it—three weeks later.

On any given Sunday in Cebu, delos Santos would be on the winner’s podium claiming yet another medal or trophy and an envelope containing cash for winning yet another road case.

Delos Santos has thoroughly dominated Cebu running that she has won all the races she joined here—all first place finishes.

But when she was first here on the eve of the Run to the Max race in October 2008, delos Santos had nothing but hope, a pair of shoes and enough money to buy apples for dinner.

She won that race.

Part of the money she won she used to pay for the loan she got to pay for her fare to Cebu. The rest she gave to her parents and spent for incidental expenses.

With no regular races in Zamboanga, delos Santos decided to transfer to Cebu with Managil.

Managil is a fast runner and has won races here. But he stopped racing to concentrate on training delos Santos and a group of newbie runners. During races, Managil also paces delos Santos, who still fears being hit by vehicles on the road.

The 22-year-old delos Santos said she loves running so much that she plans on doing nothing but race until she is 30.

To delos Santos, running is a living.

Her race winnings pay for the apartment where she lives in, her food and the equipment of her trade—her shoes. She is also supported by running brothers JR and Rovie Aguilon. Managil said he makes sure that they budget part of her winnings to buy a pair of shoes.

Shorn of everything, delos Santos can always make money with her pair of shoes.
