On a personal note, The Great Lapu-Lapu Run is very memorable for me because I was finally able to break two hours in the 21K. According to the results, I completed my run with a net chip time of 1:58:07.

Official race times for the very successful Cebu City Marathon 2010 are now out. The times are based on ChampionChip data.

On a personal note, I finished my first 21K in 02:04:59. I aimed for a sub-2 finish but couldn’t pass up witnessing the drama in the race between Aileen Tolentino and Mary Grace delos Santos in the last few kilometers.

‘I’m gonna die but I have to win the race first’
Jan 8th
On the halfway point of her 21-kilometer race during the Mindanao eliminations of the Milo Marathon on Nov. 8, 2008, Mary Grace delos Santos blacked out.
The Zamboanga City native lay sprawled and bloodied on one of the roads of Cagayan de Oro City after a motorcycle, sent flying by a rampaging truck, hit her.
“I don’t know how long I lay there,” delos Santos said, her expression still pained while recalling the point of impact a year later on the tracks of the Cebu City Sports Center, “I blacked out.”

( PHOTO FROM SUN.STAR CAGAYAN DE ORO)She also does not know whether she was between the wheels of the truck or beside them when the vehicle continued to run after the accident.
What she recalls, however, is her fierce determination to finish the race that she was already leading. She got on her feet and started checking her body gingerly for injuries before breaking into a run.
“People were telling me to pull out of the race,” delos Santos said in Bisaya, “but I wanted to continue. I wanted to finish the race. I was determined to finish the race.”
City Hall to close half of roads for Cebu City Marathon
Dec 8th
For the first time in Cebu City, the City Government will be closing half of the road for a run. Cebu City Councilor Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem announced in a press briefing yesterday that half of the road of the Cebu City Marathon route will be closed from the firing of the gun at 4 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. The entire stretch of the South Road Properties (SRP), however, will be closed starting at midnight. (For an interactive map of the marathon route, please check our previous article)
Jakosalem and officials of Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC), which is organizing the Cebu City Marathon 2010, said they decided to close the road to ensure the safety of runners.
RUNNERS’ SAFETY. Organizers Meyrick Jacalan and John Pages of the Cebu Executive Runners Club and Cebu City Councilor Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem discuss the closure of the entire SRP route and half of the Cebu City roads that are part of the marathon route on Jan. 10, 2010. Organizers said they pushed for the closure of part of the road to ensure safety of runners. (Photo by Max Limpag)John Pages of CERC said that although there are runs every Sunday in Cebu, roads aren’t closed and runners have to contend with at times impatient drivers angered by the traffic jam. (On a side note, I actually punched the side of a jeepney that cut me off in Mandaue City during the Rock and Run, not to be recommended, believe me.)
In other developments announced in yesterday’s press conference at the City Sports Club:
- Ayala Center Cebu has confirmed that a pre-race pasta party will be held on Jan. 8 at The Terraces. Ayala Center Cebu division head Joy Polloso said there will be free food for the first 500 runners.Polloso also said they are working with Ayala Center Cebu merchants, especially those in Active Zone, to offer registered runners discounts during the marathon expo, which will be held the week before the marathon.
Cebu City Marathon interactive route maps now available
Dec 5th
I’ve just finished setting up the interactive route maps for the different distances of the Cebu City Marathon on Jan. 10, 2010. The maps only contain route data for now. But as soon as I get data on where the water stations will be deployed, I will add these to the map.
The maps are interactive. You can zoom into and out of it and pan it around to check the other parts of the route.
I will also be adding information on key tourist and historical spots, for the benefit of out-of-town runners.
Here’s the map for the full marathon course:
