Unilab to hold Run United in Cebu on Dec. 18

Organizers are currently holding a press conference on the Cebu edition of Run United by Unilab and RunRio.

* Organizer says Cebu leg is final leg of nationwide Run United series.
* Lester Castillo, Sports Director of Unilab, says their company wants to promote active lifestyle among Filipino families.
* Castillo says they are targetting 5,000 runners for the Cebu leg.
* All 21Kfinishers will get finishers’ shirts and medals.
* RunRio says they are the first to use an iPad automated registration system for race registration.
*Local organizer Kenneth Casquejo of RunCheck says RunRio will not impose a cutoff on 21K runners.

Talisay City to run for a smoke-free environment

According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco kills more than five million people a year — more than HIV, TB and malaria combined, and it will kill more unless urgent action is taken.

It is a fact that a lot of dreaded diseases like cancer, chronic lung disease, asthma, cardiovascular disease are caused by tobacco smoke. It is time for smokers to kick the habit and for non-smokers to help in the campaign against the killer vice.

The Talisay District Hospital, as one of the primary providers of health services in the community, aims not only to treat but to protect its clientele from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke. The hospital has therefore embarked on the promotion of tobacco cessation in its institution and nearby communities.

To gain a city-wide awareness of this program, the Talisay District Hospital Committee on Tobacco Cessation, in cooperation with the Talisay City Runners Club, will launch on August 28 the “Run for a 100% Smoke-Free Environment.”

The run will be in 3k, 5k, 10k and 21k categories. It will start and end at the Talisay City Hall by way of the SRP. For more information and details about how you can join the run and/or help in the smoke-free campaign, please call 273-3225. (PR)

Aboitiz Race To Reduce 2011 finish times now out

Organizers have released the finish times of the Aboitiz Race To Reduce 2011 participants. Last Sunday’s race was dominated by Kenyans. James Cherutich topped the full marathon with a time of 2:24.12, finishing ahead of compatriot Josephat Kiptanui, who finished in2:25.20. Cherutich told reporters he will use his winnings to pay for training expenses.

Eduardo Buenavista, the Philippine’s record holder for the marathon, finished third with a time of 2:26:21.

Rising Cebuana running star Mary Joy Tabal recorded her first marathon win by finishing Sunday’s race in 2:57:59, a personal best. Luisa Raterta of Manila placed second with a time of 3:07.50 while Ailene Tolentino placed third with her time of 3:09.46.

Aboitiz Race to Reduce 2011 Finishers

Quit smoking; start Ungo Running

Stop smoking, start running. That’s the theme of tomorrow night’s Ungo Friday Night Run that will start at The Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu.

STOP SMOKING, START RUNNING. Running is one of the best ways to help you quit smoking.

Organizers are inviting non-runners, newbies, seasoned runners and smokers who’ve long wanted to quit the habit to attend the event, which is free and open to everyone.

The event is organized by the Ungo Runners, a group that runs every Friday night on the streets of Cebu City.

Businessman and runner Richard Ho is scheduled to talk about his personal experience in kicking a smoking habit and starting and keeping a running habit. Dr. John Clifford Aranas, an ultra-marathoner, will talk about the clinical aspect of smoking.

After their talk, the group will walk and run five kilometers inside the Cebu Business Park and finish at the Asiatown IT Park.

The Ungo Friday Night Run is open to the public. Those who want to join can just go to The Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu at 9 p.m. tomorrow.

The Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu is a center that caters to the needs of people engaged in an active lifetstyle. It has served as a venue of sporting events since its grand opening in January 2010. The Active Zone is also the most popular registration site for running events in Cebu.

Cebu City Marathon organizers publish names of registrants

Organizers of the Cebu City Marathon on Jan. 9 have published the names of those who registered for the race. The names (listed below) are being published so that runners can double-check their registrations and contact organizers in case of problems.

The 42K and 21K race packs will be released starting Wednesday at the Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu. Race packs for 5K registrants will be released starting Thursday.

Ungo Runners to meet during Midnight Run

This week’s Ungo Run will be timed with the Midnight Run on Saturday night. While the run will start at midnight, Ungo Runners will meet two hours earlier, at 10 p.m. at the venue in the City Sports Club to discuss updates on our Christmas party on Dec. 19 and to pick new names for our manito-manita.

Ungo Runners who can’t attend are requested to arrange for someone to drop their names and to pick names for them.

Ungo Runners are asked to wear their Ungo Shirts for the run. If you have the black shirt with reflectorized print, please wear it. Please feel free to run in costumes, organizers will be handing out a prize for the runners wearing the best costumes.

Registration for the Midnight Run is still ongoing in Runnr. But Ungo Runners can register using the form below and just pay at the venue. Please register ASAP so that I can submit the names to the race organizer later today. Thanks and see you!

Ungo Runners registration for Cebu City Marathon clinic

The Cebu Executive Runners Club, Runner’s World Magazine and Ayala Center Cebu will be holding a clinic for participants of the Cebu City Marathon on Jan. 9, 2010. The clinic will be held on Dec. 18 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at The Active Zone in Ayala Center Cebu. The clinic will discuss tapering techniques and preparing for the race. The first 150 registrants to the clinic will get free copies of Men’s Health, Women’s Health or Runner’s World magazines. Organizers have requested Ungo Runners to register as a group so that they can set aside our free magazines in advance.

To facilitate registration, I’ve set up an online registration form for Ungo Runners who want to attend the clinic. Only certified Ungo Runners (those who’ve joined at least 3 Ungo Runs, whether night runs or LSDs) will be accepted. I will still review the submissions. I will submit the names by Monday, Dec. 13. You have to register before then.

CebuRunning among 20 finalists in Best Cebu Blogs Award

The CebuRunning website is one of this year’s 20 finalists in the Best Cebu Blogs Award. I never thought the site would be included in the lists of finalists because the nomination, which involved asking people to like your entry in Facebook, happened in the weeks leading to the 1st Cebu Ultramarathon.

Training to run 50 kilometers left no time to mount a Facebook campaign.

Fortunately, my wife and CebuRunning co-founder Marlen and die-hard Ungo Runners asked enough people to “like” CebuRunning to help make it to the finals. Marlen and I weren’t able to promote well in Facebook her MyCebu.ph website, which we just started last month. I thought MyCebu.ph deserved the finals slot more and stood a better chance than CebuRunning. But, there is always next year.

Newton Running is offering 7 race entries to the to the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon on June 27 in Malaysia to those who buy a pair of its shoes.

The Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2010 is one of the biggest running events in Southeast Asia and it is expected to bring many running enthusiasts from all over the world to the Malaysian capital.

For every purchase of a pair of Newton Running shoes in cash or through a Standard Chartered credit card, the buyer is entitled to one 1 raffle coupon.
